We have just one planet to live, love and laugh on.... and on 5^th June, World Environment Day reminds us just how important it is to start with anything small that you can do for the earth. Here at Dilly’s celebrating the goodness of mother earth takes a truly Sri Lankan meaning, as our inspiration for the celebration comes from our long standing love for nature as people.

Our inspiration comes from far and wide at Dilly’s, and fashion is simply a way to celebrate the wonderful people and things in our country that inspire us. So, as the next step of our “Truly Sri Lankan” t-shirt range, we reached back 200 years into the Kandyan era, and found beautiful impressions of Sri Lanka’s love for nature, and the life-giving tree.

Amongst the T-shirts, you’ll find the flowering Na tree- the native Ceylon Ironwood that is the national tree of Sri Lanka. Our village heritage comes to mind with the Puwak tree whose fruits are often chewed wrapped in betel leaves, a favourite pastime. The revered coconut -the “Kapruka”, because every part of this tree from root to fruit, blesses Sri Lankans’ daily lives. Sweet treats cooking on a fire are brought to mind by the treacle and jaggery giving Kithul tree. We’ve also used the Banana tree, because apart from the delicious fruits, the green leaves add a touch of flavour to the packets of rice they are used to wrap. And our collection is complete with the cooling, shady Nuga tree- under whose branches the poetess Gajaman Nona wrote her verses, and the villages of yore gathered to trade or to rest.

Because we believe that saving the earth starts with you, Dilly’s is lending World Environment Day celebrations a unique meaning with a demonstration on “Urban Agriculture” on 11th June at Dilly's Distinct - Bullers Road by our expert, Dr. Vindhya Basnayake of the Plant Virus Indexing Centre, Homagama. We were inspired by this concept because you can grow your favourite fruit, vegetable or flowering plant in your balcony or backyard, using recycled materials as a base. Because we know that a ripening fruit or joyous flower can soothe your mind in the stressful city where space is small and time is rare. Recycling is the best way to protect the earth from wasteful destruction. This is our way of inspiring you, as we have been inspired by Sri Lankan nature, to protect, to grow and conserve. Every tree makes a difference. Every person who plants a tree also makes a difference. It is easier than you think to do your part in the endeavour to be green. So come join us to learn how urban agriculture can make a huge difference in our lives.

Let your light shine through...

After many colourful voyages around the world, the Dilly’s creative team is now exploring home soil for creative inspiration.

Our first range of all-Sri Lankan t-shirts debuted in the joyous avurudu season which was all about fun, frolic and family. Featuring artist-par-excellence Sybil Wettasinghe’s creations, they were a roaring success – everyone who picked up a t-shirt saw a member of their very own family caricatured on them.

But as the month of May brings with it the Festival of Lights - Wesak , we’re looking at things in a different light. Festivities in SriLanka take on a different sheen this month, remembering the light of purity and goodness that radiated from the Lord Buddha. And it’s a special Wesak celebration too, commemorating 2600 years since the enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, on whose teachings Sri Lanka based the greater part of her civilisation.

The typical wesak celebration evokes memories of colour and light in the memory of every Sri Lankan, despite differences of race or religion. Pandals illuminated with hundreds of thousands of colourful light bulbs are a display in pyrotechnic prowess... and the Lord Buddha’s seven-shaded halo shines forth even today, over two millennia on. Lamps illuminate temples and homes with yellow-orange glow.But the light that truly delights is that shining from the “Wesak Kuduwa”, the beautifully crafted lantern; that is an exercise in faith, devotion and illuminating art.

At Dilly’s we’re celebrating this work of art, be it shaped like a “nelum mala” or “ata pattama”; decorated with plain coloured paper, or intricate cut work of a craftsman, through a range of t-shirts inspired by Wesak Lanterns. Crafted in varying shapes, the t-shirts feature special cut work to symbolize the light that shines through and illuminates the wesak lantern.

Wear one this wesak, and celebrate the festival of light that transcends race and religion. Let the light of compassion, purity and the supreme enlightenment shine through you, to every corner of Sri Lanka.

Aerial Silk takes its name from the majestic aerial acrobatics displays where artists’ use fabrics to wrap, suspend, fall, swing and spiral their bodies into and out of various arrangements, relying on their training and skill only. These artists with grace are seen to fly through the air, striking poses and figures while giving the impression of flight.
The fabrics used during these shows are ribbons of silk, a perfect complement to the aerialist; flexible, atheistically elegant but most of all strong. Suspended nearly 50 feet in the air on a smooth, shiny, shimmering piece of fabric without safety harness or net the performer knows that death is only as far as the limits of their own sheer physical strength. The exhilaration of aerial fabric performance and can only be surpassed by the rewarding complete and total awe of human spirit and strength by its spectators.

Ok, so where did Dilly’s get inspiration for their newest “Circus Couture” Visual and Marketing Campaign?
In recent years this trend has been flying off the catwalks, the stages of concert halls and album covers, so we decided to introduce it to the readers of the blog, our long standing customers and the residents of Sri Lanka……….
So what is Circus Couture?
Circus or Carnival Couture revitalizes times past, and encourages participants to inject a bit of color, energy and youthfulness into their wardrobe – perfect for the coming party season. It’s a style that borrows from the big-top, burlesque and pin-up and sits comfortably affront of the dark sensual backdrop of Moulin Rouge.

Circus Couture is seen to be perfectly highlighted on the catwalk at Anna Sui Spring 2010 show; Ringmaster Modes, were all the rage with Sui’s high-top inspired circus animal prints, ringmaster jackets and re-colored Liberty prints.
Another Circus Classic was bought to us by no other than everyone’s favorite comeback queen Brittany Spears’ during her latest Circus themed tour. Other examples are seen through main Brittany rival Miss Aguilera on her “Enter the Circus” music video.

While undoubtedly entertaining, I do have my doubts that the current ringmaster modes, red noses and clown wigs will take hold on the Colombo high street and so, how below is our Dilly’s guide to creating the look without trolling the streets looking like a fancy dress costume?

Crochet is everywhere. From hats to shoes the trend has been hitting the latest fashion shows and a couple of young celebrities brought this trend to the fashion forefront during their recent appearances.

Formerly the stuff of craft fairs and doilies, crochet is slowly shedding its homespun image and becoming chic. Credit influential fashion houses like Chanel and Issey Miyake for this notable transformation, as their S/S 10 collections shed new light on this decorative knit.

As these stylish celebrities have shown us crochet can be a choice cloth for all occasions. FIND THE RIGHT FIT WITH THE DILLY’S T-SHIRT RANGE!

When it comes to buying a t-shirt you’ll love, the right fit is crucial – even more important than color and cut.
A t-shirt that’s too tight can reveal everything underneath it, like bra straps, bulges, belly buttons and more. Make sure the fit is snug, but not restrictive!

Also soon to be hitting the store in September will be our ECO CHIC COLLECTION PART DUEX. We were amazed at the positive reactions to our ECO CHIC A COLLECTION FOR FAITH last month. We opened our doors for the launch at Dilly’s Distinct at 10am on a Saturday and had sold out of a few styles by 1pm! No sooner had we launched that we were back to the drawing board working on our next ECO collection. Again, we have attached the images of a few styles to wet your appetite.

DISCOVERIES
Exciting new word time kids and it’s one of those words that once heard will never leave you. Some people call them ‘knitted jeans’ others call them ‘pull on jeans’ but Dilly’s use the word “Jegging” say it a few times.
WHAT DO YOU CALL A CROSS BETWEEN A LEGGING AND A PAIR OF JEANS? – A JEGGING
On some recent trips overseas we saw an insurgence of these “Jeggings” on the international high street and just had to bring some back to SL with us. Hello and welcome to the Dilly’s newsletter. Another month, another late newsletter! We apologize for our tardiness although we have every excuse as Dilly’s HQ has been a hive of activity this month, most notably for the design team which has substantially grown with four new design recruits. We wish Ludmila, Irangi, Dulani and Mathusha all the best and a long and prosperous career at Dilly’s.

Too much to report and too little time, so without further ado, let’s begin….

The latest “Moods Collection” signifies a welcomed return to Dilly’s for Dilani Wijeysekera, and a cherished reply to those women crying out for timeless, high quality collections which maintain the style and class to become vintage classics of the future.

Inspirational Tueday - Coco Chanel:Fashion Icon

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” -Coco Chanel-
Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883-1971). Her name creates a picture of an attractive young woman in black suit with a string of pearls and in this wear she made a revolution in world’s fashion! She created not only fashionable and immortal suits, ageless “little black dress” (that was introduced in 1926) and perfume Channel № 5, she made women believe that they can live their own lives, they can be independent and wear clothes according to their own preferences.

She opened her first shop in 1912 and explained to women that they can wear comfortable and at the same time elegant things, like: perfectly tailored suits and dresses, accessories, hats, she introduced jersey and short skirts in a common use, perfume and, of course, trousers, that used to be exclusively men’s privilege. As a rule, Coco was wearing manlike clothes and had a boyish look. In 1922 she introduced her own fragrance Chanel № 5; because it was the fifth sample product she created. Marilyn Monroe commented it was her favorite, and still today a bottle of Chanel No. 5 is sold every 30 seconds.

Chanel felt a woman needed to look like a woman but live like a man. Rebelling against corset-bound fashions, she devised simple tailored garments, adapting menswear to the female body and introducing pants to the fairer sex. Balancing the masculine feel with something soft, like a silk blouse, she would layer on jewelry of delicate opulence. The result: a pared-down elegance that offered women a new way of dressing―and freedom.

The ’80s trend of gel sandals has made a comeback; So take your spring and summer wardrobe to new heights and have some fun under the sun with these trend-setting jelly sandals.

Loads of big-name designers are making their own versions this season, including Diane Von Furstenberg (below), Givenchy, Valentino, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and See by Chloe—America’s trend setting first lady was photographed walking in a pair of smoky see-through flats, reminiscent of the late 80s shoes so many of know all too well. It's just the most recent example of this footwear trend coming around yet again. And celebrities like Whitney Port and Anne Hathaway have been spotted rocking the trend, too.

I've heard plenty of groans from people who think these shoes should stay in the 80s, but considering how many times they've come back in vogue--this is at least the third, by my count--they must have some kind of allure. They're definitely environmentally friendly (and cheaper than leather shoes) and they can make you look like you're not wearing anything on your feet, which some women like...what do you think, ladies? Hello and welcome to the third edition of our Dilly’s and Carlo monthly newsletter. Another month, another newsletter, you will be glad to hear we are going to keep it short and sweet for this month, so without further ado, it’s the April / May Dilly’s and Carlo newsletter…..

MONSOON MADNESS AND HOLIDAY BLUES - The months of April and May definitely put our Design Team through their paces! Sri Lanka is not shy to the odd public holiday or two and this is especially true throughout April as we celebrated New Year and all the mercantile holidays that go with it….. it’s a hard life! The prolonged holidays were then followed by the month of May which saw the heavens open and our usually sunny shores get hit by more rain than ever before! And yet, despite all these obstacles www.dillysfashions.com head quarters managed to launch three of their finest collections yet – with one special collection waiting in the wings to be launched later this month (for those with no patience see SNEAK PEAK below)

And now May the Month of Vesak, so before we move on we would like to wish you all a Happy Vesak, or more appropriately ….. Pri Thi Vesak

THE VESAK COLLECTION - The mood of the collection starts on a light note and celebrates the purity and awakening of the Vesak Festival with the main colour being white. The spirit of the festival is brought out through a dash of yellow through the collection and the styles are simple with pristine and unusual detailing of pretty embroidery fabrics and lace, pleating and tucks and light rouging. The fabrics we have used are cotton silks, linen, voile and chiffon ideal for day wear.

ORIGAMI WORKWEAR COLLECTION - Following the HUGE success of THE GREAT WHITE SHIRT COLLECTION, the Dilly’s Designers were put under pressure to produce an equally iconic follow up Work Wear collection….and FAST! Taking their inspiration from the complex and intricate styles of Origami a collection of styles with crisp details in the form of unusual pleating and little shapes of origami was compiled. The collection was aimed at the smart business women who need a little touch of excitement added to her everyday work shirt. Cotton fabrics have been used for extreme comfort and the colours were in keeping with the sophisticated mood of the customer, with a dusky colour palate of coral, grey and rose pink.

THE HERITAGE COLLECTION - What better way to bring in the New Year than to welcome back DILANI WIJEYESEKERA into our Dilly’s Design studio! Dilani had spent some time way from Fashion Designing, instead focusing her artistic flare towards an escalating career in sculpture (is there anything Dilani cannot do!?) However, April saw Dilani returning to Dilly’s HQ and produce a unique signature MOOD COLLECTION, much to the delight of our Head Office Team and the loyal Dilly’s customers. THE HERITAGE COLLECTION was launched at the beginning of May and with limited quantities produced, we advise you to quick step to the shops soon to view this collection if you haven’t already!

We are also pleased to announce a NEWSLETTER EXCLUSIVE - Dilani will now be making regular collections for Dilly’s so watch this space for collection launch dates!

Hello and welcome to the second edition of our Dilly’s newsletter, through which we will be informing you of new Collections, Promotions and a behind-the-scenes insight into the world of Dillys, Carlo and Discoveries – a little something for everyone we like to think!

Firstly, we would like to apologize for the delay in sending this second newsletter (last edition was sent 15^th January!) However, we have every excuse as February and March 2010 saw the successful launch of FOUR unique and distinctive collections from Dilly’s, an expansion of our “SHOE & BAG BOUTIQUE” from Discoveries and the launch of Carlo striped and self collar polo tshirts. A notable feat for our design and purchasing departments who have been extremely busy behind the scenes!

And so, without further ado, let’s begin.....

FASHION AT WORK - THE GREAT WHITE SHIRT COLLECTION

Inspiration for this collection stems from the fashion icon Eva Longoria and the combination of her feminine yet smart personality. The modern woman is a confident and strong individual who also likes to compliment her soft and feminine side. The sharp lines of the classic white shirts are softened by pleats and pintucks as they unfold on the garment giving it detail and style. A subtle charm is seen as a strip of lace envelopes itself onto the precise lines of the seams. The magical spectrum of white is brought to reality when the color Black is added as a dramatic contrast to the shirts in the form of complementary items such as Pants and Bustier.

This collection was launched in the first week of March and is currently available in all Dilly’s outlets. RESERVATION OPTIONS available (see below for details)

SNEAK PEEK - We have an exclusive for you here at Dilly’s. Details of a collection not yet to be launched in stores. THE REAL WOMAN AVURUDHU COLLECTION – Inspired by color and emotion this collection florishes with opulence of a new year that awaits, mirrored in the richness and depth of color used.

The darker shades represent the challenges that lay ahead and the lighter shades represent the beauty and freedom of a new chapter. The fabrics keep in with the theme, with thai silk being the main fabric in the evening wear garments.

The lighthearted and free spiritedness of the day-time garments are made in chiffon depict hope for a new year, the perfect fabric to compliment a casual, yet rich, day look.

The details in this collection are classic with an ethnic touch, with rouged flower details, shaded panels, knots, cutwork details and frills. The styles in the collection are dainty and conservative keeping in mind the season and occasion.
